Roman Nose State Park Review

Roman Nose State Park is one of the original state parks in Oklahoma. Located approximately 7 miles north of Watonga Oklahoma, the park has been welcoming visitors for 90 years. It is named after a Cheyenne chief, Henry Roman Nose. Part of Henry’s ranch is now part of the state park. I’ll be explaining my recent weekend experience at the park and help you understand what there is to do in the park and surrounding area.

Camping at Roman Nose

The state park has three main camping areas, group areas, hiking trails, golfing, horse riding, and lake activities. The park is dominated by 2 lakes found in the northern part of the park. Both lakes offer fishing, kayaking, paddleboats, and of course fishing. There is ample fishing and lots of people were all around the lake fishing.

The three campgrounds are located in the central part of the state park and offer a wide variety of amenities. I stayed in the Beaver Damn tent area. This area also has teepee rentals but they seemed to be in disuse at the time of my stay. I would call if you’re interested in the teepees which have electricity and lights on the inside for a unique stay.

Beaver Damn tent area is only for tent camping and there are only fire pits and grill areas located in this tent area. One thing to keep a note of is the Beaver Damn area only has one bathroom building for the entire area. There is only one shower and 2 toilets and no hot water. I’d recommend going up to the Canyon Vista RV area and use their bathroom building. I didn’t use it but when I drove by it appears you may need to pay for tokens because of there’s a token vending machine on the side. Beaver Damn area has plenty of trees and a basic set up so the size of lots varies. Besides the bathroom set up, I’d recommend this area.

Another tent camping area is Bitter Creek. This area seemed to have a mix of tent and RV areas. I didn’t take note of any bathroom buildings but the area is near the cabins so there may be something up in that area that I’m unaware of.

RV Camping

The Canyon Vista RV area is just that, an RV area. This area has a new bathroom building, RV plugins, and is located right next to the water. There are no trees in this area so be ready to have artificial shade or go inside your camper because there will be no protection from the sun. You’ll have to deal with potential mud or uneven surfaces because most of the RV spots are grass. Make sure you take plenty of quarters because the bathroom appears to have a token machine for using the showers. Many people were fishing right from the edge of the RV area and it was very popular with everyone in the lot since this RV park is right on the water.

Cabins

Speaking of cabins, there are also cabin duplexes available for rent if you prefer more enclosed conditions. You can find out more information about the cabins at the state park website.

Trails and Horses

Roman Nose State Park has a ton of activities. The lake and fishing are just one area you can enjoy while you’re in the park. The hiking around the lakes and into the eastern part of the park are well marked and easily navigated. The main trail to the east of the lakes is the trail to Inspiration Point. This trail can be followed by using the red arrow markers.

Inspiration Point trail is located on the western part of a mesa area and allows for wide-sweeping views of the valley to the east. The place where we stopped was located at 35.937643, -98.419703. The hiking was only about 1.5 miles from the lakes and there is a natural spring located at 35.937927, -98.423067.

There are also three other springs located on the western edge of the park by the swimming pool area near 35.932405, -98.442092. The Three Springs trail is a short hike and has three springs and can be waded in and enjoyed.

The trails also started from the lodge area and met in the eastern parts of the park. The path around the damn was closed during my stay. Always check signs to see if there are any trail closings. Bring plenty of water and watch out for cactus, rattlesnakes, and rocks while you’re out in the canyons and cliffs.

The park also features horse stables and activities can be arranged with the rangers to take the horses riding. Please call the park office and inquire about bringing your own horses or enjoying the stable horses already there.

Golfing

Finally, the state park features an 18 hole golf course and it’s a beauty. The course weaves in and out of cliffs and plains. It is very well placed among the topography of the park and has interesting hazards and seems to be a challenging course. One of the holes has you hit over a valley from one cliff to the cliff on the other side. I’d recommend it if anyone has time to play 18 and brings the clubs. It’s a unique edition to the park for sure!

My Experience

I really enjoyed my stay at Roman Nose State Park and I will go back again. My main complaint was the bathroom facilities and they obviously need some updates and maintenance. Now that I know where other bathroom buildings are I will probably just go to those when needed. The Beaver Creek tent area has some small camping spots. Be prepared for tight spaces. Go to the other two RV areas if you want larger sports, unfortunately.

Finally, don’t forget the swimming pool and the three springs area. This area is off on its own and I almost forgot to even stop by and see the area before leaving. The horse stables and golf course are unique additions you don’t see too often at state parks. The lodge also has a restaurant inside so if you food options there. Roman Nose State Park may be your spot if you’re near Oklahoma City and need a fun weekend trip!
