Cochem the City
Cochem is a beautiful wine town on the Moselle River and a really wonderful weekend trip for anyone in the area. It’s full of narrow streets, old houses and hotels, and tons of river and forest trails all around the area. I had lunch at Pizzeria Pomodoro and it was pretty good and right in the walking area of town! I’d go back.
There are also several wine cafes where you can get a bit and local wine. There are several around town and if you haven’t ever got local Moselle wine then this is another worthwhile stop. Finally, there are several small local hotels around the area and a few camping areas. There aren’t large chains if you want to stay at a more worldwide known hotel company. I think it adds to the charm how many things are still very local. I stayed at the Moselle Hotel and got the last room by calling. It was a standard small room on the top floor and was basic and I expected that. It was small and quaint.
Hiking around Cochem
The hike to the north of Cochem was a challenging and beautiful hike along the ridge of the hills. The trek to the top of the hills is very steep and a moderate to hard hike. It tired me out and in the map above you can see how slow I went!
There are a few lookout areas like that Pinnerkreuz and the Schwedenkreuz which are wonderful spots to look out over the entire river valley. There is also a wild park that has animal shows and you can drive or hike up to the park. It was closed by the time I walked by.
The final portion of the hike was coming out of the woods and walking through the vineyards near Klotten. It’s very interesting to see the vines on the steep hills and how it’s all constructed. There was also a cool wine hut if you need to sit and have a drink! Don’t forget you have to walk back along the road to get back to Cochem! Happy Hiking!
