Saarburg Germany is a wonderful hidden gem in the Moselle River area and worthy of a day trip or even a long weekend in this beautiful area. The city is named for the Saar River. Vineyards cover the hills and trails are all around so you can have a wonderful active weekend. Here’s a review of my time in the town!
Pros
- The beautiful old town center
- Lots of outdoor activities in the area
- Picturesque old stream and waterfall
Cons
- Busy weekends
- Train access but somewhat isolated
The History of Saarburg
The town is located right on the River Saar only a few kilometers from the confluence of Saar and Moselle River. The town also has a small “river” called the Leuk which is the centerpiece of the downtown area of the village. There is a 60-foot waterfall which is the result of the townsfolk manipulating the river’s course to build a mill on the Leuk.
Things to Do
The center of Saarburg is the centerpiece of the town. It is picturesque and lined with cafes. The town has quaint hotels and buildings right on the small river. Flowers lined the walls of the small river and were so gorgeous in the late summer. The waterfall and mill add a wonderful layer to the cute downtown.
You can walk to the two main churches in the town. The catholic church is near downtown and opened most days to be viewed. There is also a small vista that overlooks the Saar and park area near the catholic church entrance. The reformed protestant church is in the northern part of town near the old castle. The protestant church is a smaller church but has beautiful stained glass windows!
Finally, the castle on the far end of the city is the tallest thing around and offers wonderful views of the valley! The stairs to the top are very narrow so be prepared to be in tight spaces for a few minutes. The top will have a 360-degree view of the entire surrounding area of vineyards, parks, and the town. Worth it in my opinion!
