Michelsburg Castle near Kusel Germany is a great and easy trip to make from Kaiserslautern and even closer to Kusel! It’s a smaller castle and only about 25% of the walls remain. There is also a catholic church on the opposite hill only a few hundred meters away. It was a great easy trip for a weekend to get away and see something new!
How to get to Michelsburg
Michelsburg Castle is only a few kilometers southeast of Kusel and only about 45 minutes away from Kaiserslautern to to the northwest. I took the backroads in order to get to the parking lot but you could also take the autobahn. The parking area is small but pretty easy to get to and the hike up the hill is only a few minutes. There are also several hiking and biking trails that await visitors to the area. Be careful because there is a mineral quarry near by so be careful as you travel through the area.
The Castle Ruins
The castle and church have been on these two hills since at least 1260. The church, the manor, and the area were under the Veldenz family. The castle became in ruins by the 1800s and all the remains of the original castle and monastery is the church and the 2 walls from the manor.
I love hearing about the intricate family histories in all these areas! The Veldenz family was apparently considered a count and was able to sway favor with other more powerful kings to secure this area. It’s interesting to hear about this history all from visiting a small castle ruins. It’s a small area and building but it’s still pretty cool to imagine a small group of people maintaining the court and manor!
