Are you ready for a quaint Bavarian spa weekend only 5 hours from the KMC? Oberstaufen is where you want to be! This town is quaint and full of spas and hotels for you to enjoy a quiet weekend. I went to the Linder Hotel which is situated on the city park and made for a wonderful time to get out and walk around the beautiful area. Here’s what to expect on your next weekend retreat!

Around Oberstaufen
Oberstaufen is exactly what you’d expect from a quintessential Bavarian town! It has a gorgeous city park full of walking paths, a giant kid’s jungle gym, slides, art installations, and small streams running through it. There was even a small field with cows and goats grazing. You could hear their bells jingling all weekend! It really was quaint!
The town is also stereotypically Bavarian. There’s a large church, a walking area, restaurants, and timber-frame houses and businesses all around the central district. There are also a lot of outdoor stores for biking, hiking, and adventuring in the area. We even saw power paragliders getting ready to fly on our hike to Buchenegger Waterfall. Be ready for lots of fun in Oberstaufen!
Oberstaufen to Buchenegger Waterfall
The hike from Oberstaufen to Buchenegger Waterfall is easy to moderate. The hike is mostly a paved road up to the parking area at the top of the gorge. The hiking into the gorge area is the hardest part of the hike. It’s well managed and trafficked regularly but be ready for some big steps and steep grades. That portion is only about 10 minutes to make it to the bottom of the valley.
The Buchenegger Waterfall is a wonderful spot to relax and hang out. It was busy when we arrived at the bottom but there was plenty of room to move around. You might want to bring your swimwear because there were several people enjoying the water and jumping in! There were even a few people jumping into the upper pool. As always, swim at your own risk. I decided knee-deep was good enough that day!
The Hotel
We stayed at the Lindner Hotel in Oberstaufen. It is a great spot and this is my second time staying at this hotel. They are dog-friendly but make sure to email or call for your reservation because dogs are allowed only in certain rooms.
The hotel is located right on the city park and is super convenient for playing at the playground if you have kids. There is a bar and restaurant in the hotel and we made sure to eat there one night as a quiet meal. The food in the hotel is very good so make sure to try breakfast or dinner!
Finally, the spa and wellness area is the true gem of the hotel. You can get facials, massages, and other body wellness procedures. There is even a couples package you can purchase with a private hot tub and sauna area. You can even buy their products if you like what they use.
The spa and pool areas are very nice! There is an indoor and outdoor pool, a whirlpool, a 95°C sauna, a damp sauna, and a 65°C essential oil sauna. This is my favorite part of the Lindner Hotel because I can get some quiet time and enjoy the hot temps! Wellness isn’t my jam, but relaxing sauna time is!
The final cascade is about 5 meters tall. There is a higher cascade and a middle pool if you’re willing to hike more!
Oberstaufen is about 5 hours drive from Kaiserslautern to Oberstaufen. There are also DB train options to get there.
