We made it out to the Baumholder Campground for the weekend! Here’s a few things to note if you decide to make it the hour drive north from the Kaiserslautern Military Community and go sleep in a tent! Enjoy!
Baumholder Outdoor Recreation
The Baumholder Outdoor Recreation Center is in charge of the campground. When we went, it was very quiet! There was only one other family staying in a yurt. We paid $15 after we stayed the one night in an unpowered spot. You can call them at +496111435313401 to get more information. Unfortunately, they were not a lot of help when I called a week beforehand on what was available at the grounds.

Baumholder Outdoor Rec has lots of different amenities. They have a shooting range that only requires a day of training to use their guns and ammo. There is the campground. They also have guided trips and I was honestly impressed. It was a lot better than what I’ve seen from the Kaiserslautern Outdoor Rec. It was a very active environment when I went there to pay.

The Baumholder Campground
There really is so much potential in the Baumholder Campground. It is off-base but it is government property. There are about 3 yurts which you can rent and stay inside. The yurt spots also have an improved wood/charcoal grilling stand.
There are powered, unpowered, and a group camping area. We stayed in an unpowered spot. There is an Euro 16 amp connection. Some people on the internet commented you can by an adaptor and plug it in to power things like mattresses or lights with 220V and up to 16 amps of power. We didn’t have that so we had to improvise!
There were also very few camping pits. I was able to find a camping pit with a grill and pull it to our spot. We were able to make it work but had there been more people there it would have been a bit more difficult.
Finally, don’t worry about the bathroom. That was honestly a highlight. They have 2 bathroom outhouses and they have a toilet and a sink. You’ll be fine. I was honestly worried about the bathroom amenities and wasn’t sure what to expect but it was alright!
This campground is unfortunately neglected. There are signs of people just starting a fire on the grass, signs of people digging holes, there really is a problem. People want a campfire and I agree. Be ready to rough it if you go and get a spot. There are a few pictures on Google maps that show a busy campground. We didn’t experience that but I hope you do and you have fun because we had fun even with the lack of amenities! Happy trekking!
