Brno Czechia Weekend

I had a quick weekend to Brno Czechia and met a friend there. It was a nice solo getaway to a cool city. Here’s some fun things I got into while I was there and you should too!

Getting to Brno

I drove to Brno. Remember, Czech Republic requires a vignette if you drive on their autobahn. There are some unregulated portions around towns but I went ahead and payed the fee. Here’s the official website. You pay and put your license plate in and pick a start date.

I went with the 10 day vignette to make sure I didn’t have any lapses. One thing to note, there are tons of third party websites that will “sell” you a Czech vignette but eDalnice is the official website for tolls. You can also buy physical vignettes at gas stations near the border.

Brno Hotel

I stayed in downtown. It was busy that weekend due to national hockey matches. I stayed at the Grand Palace. It was a higher priced spot but I was a bit stuck due to other hotels being full. It was nice, the breakfast was good, and they had a small bar for the evening. I love being right in town to walk anywhere I need to go.

They had a valet service or you could self-park. I parked in this public garage in the mall. I stayed over night and it was about $32 for 24 hours. This is a smaller garage so be ready to wait if the light is red. It’s a single level and houses maybe 50 cars. I got lucky each time and was able to get parking or only waited for a few minutes to enter.

Brno Food

The burger restaurant was a big highlight of the weekend! We went to Fatfuck and it was excellent! We got one of the specialty burgers which was chimichurri, a special hot dog, and the 6 pack which was 6 sliders. It was so good you have to go!

There was also a small empanada spot called Monte Cristi we went to for lunch. It was pretty good too! It was a quick easy spot to get a snack after we had done some hiking and exploring. Make sure to get a raisin in yours!

Sightseeing

We decided to head north to the abyss since we had a car. We went to the Macocha Abyss which is one of the largest sinkholes in Central Europe. The entire area is also hiker friendly so we got a few miles in too. There are cave tours but they were sold out by the time we arrived but that is another option if you want to see the sinkhole from below!

There was a fee for parking and a fee for the gondola to go from the valley back up to the parking area. It was nice to get away and see the karst landscape and do some hiking. We probably could have a seen a lot more like the cave or river but it was an unplanned trip and drive but you can see a lot more!

Finally, go see the church downtown! I always try to go into the bell tower and you can in this one. We also happened to be up there when the bells rang and it was loud. Don’t worry, they also take credit card to pay to go to the top. Always go to the top!
