There’s an intact castle with a gorgeous restaurant and event space only 30 minutes north of Kaiserslautern. There is also a park area, an RV camping area, and a small art walk trail around the grounds. It’s a quaint day trip and a worthy visit for a fun afternoon.
The Reipoltskirchen Castle
The castle is considered a well-preserved moated castle in the Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany. The earliest mention of the castle is from 1190 so the castle is at least 900 years old maybe even more. The city of Kusel took ownership in 1988 and has since added a viewing platform at the very top and a restaurant and event room. It is right next to the town of the same name and there is a lot to see all around if you have a few hours. One thing to note is you will have to climb a ladder to get to the very top.
There is also a restaurant built around the center spire. You can read more about the menu and hours on its website here.
The Park and Trail
The castle is bounded on one side by the town and on the other side is a park and art trail. The park also includes an RV parking area for overnight stays. I parked in the lot just to the south of the castle located here. There is also a “peace street” around the soccer field which includes several different art sculptures. It was a fun and exciting hike that only took about 20 minutes. The path was clean and well-used. A few kiosks also sold different trinkets including some local honey for €5.
According to the website, it is open in the evenings Wednesday through Sunday.
Yes, approximately 2 RVs can camp in the parking lot to the south of the castle.
