Buzzard Roost Recreation Area in southern Indiana was a gem amongst a wonderful area of the state. It is nestled on a cliff overlooking the Ohio River but almost completely covered by the forest that is situated all around the area for miles! It was a fun little pit stop and easy to get to. It’s quiet and relaxing so stop by for sure!

Buzzard Roost Recreation Area
Southern Indiana is a gorgeous area of traditional forest that was found before Europeans arrived and the forest is thick and green in the entire area! This small campground preserves that feeling while you stay. The trees and all around and the cliff area gives you a pretty view when you find a spot to peek out of the forest trees!
Buzzard Roost is a small recreation area with very permanent items besides the campground, trail, and a few houses within a few miles that are open for rent. The campground only has 5 spots and a pit toilet. There is the standard campground fare like a picnic table, fire ring, cooking grate over the fire, and a parking pad.
I didn’t get to enjoy the trail but it is short but steep so be careful if there’s any standing water in the area. The area around the campground is wide open and lots of other trails are in the local area. There are small towns that usually have a bar or two in the town so if you do need to get away you do have a few options to get back to civilization if you need to.
Make sure to visit Buzzard Roost Recreation Area!
I went out there with my nephew just to enjoy one night and we were lucky to arrive and be the 5th and final visitor to stay. There are only 5 spots. It was a nice spot and a great one-night getaway. You would need a few more area activities if you want to stay busy while at the campground so one night was perfect for us just to get some fresh air. One last thing to remember is to be prepared to hear gunshots and hunting in the surrounding area. The national forest has lots of hunting so be ready for early morning loud bangs!
