I made it up to Frankfurt Germany for a quick weekend trip and was able to meet new people and explore some new places! Here’s a review of my journey and if you can ever make it for just a weekend you’ll find lots to do!
Pros
- A large modern city with lots to do
- Rebuilt “New Old City”
- Easy public transportation
Cons
- Expect large crowds
The Frankfurt History Museum
My first stop during my weekend trip was the Frankfurt History Museum. It’s located downtown and easily accessible via the U-Bahn or any of the many transit options in the city. It’s a moderate showcase of the history of the region and the city from medieval times all the way to today. There are several interactive exhibits and I felt it was a good use of my time for a few hours. There’s a small cafe in the basement and lockers for bags for a fee.
The “snowglobe” was not functioning while I visited. It’s one of the main exhibits and shows models of the city inside a glass ball and an arm will move into the basement and grab the appropriate model. I wish the globe was working!
I’d recommend this museum and you could spend several hours there. I was impressed by the maps and models section of the city. I love seeing the way cities change over time. The art from local historic artists and the modern life of a citizen was enjoyable too. The rest of the museum including some of the historic art, economics, and modern events was underwhelming. I’d add it to the list but it wouldn’t be at the top.
The Frankfurt Catholic Church/Dom
The Frankfurt Dom or more specifically St Bartholomew’s Catholic Church is the largest church in Frankfurt. It’s a very noticeable building along the Frankfurt skyline. The church’s construction was started in the 1200s and modifications were added until even the 1800s. It’s a beautiful church but expect some large crowds as you move around.
My favorite place to visit on any church tour is the very top of the steeple or tower. The location of the tower tour is on the southern side of the church. You can pay the cashier in this building and then they will buzz you into the narrow stairway. You do get the best views from the top of the Frankfurt skyline! Always go to the top, you won’t be disappointed!
Accommodations
I stayed at the Paulaner Am Dom hotel. It’s located right behind the church and is wonderfully located downtown. The views are also great of the Dom if you get to stay on the front side of the building. It’s advertised as a budget-friendly hotel and I’d say it matches that at €82. I got a single-person room and it was small but I expected that. The breakfast was surprisingly good and I’ll take it! I only was here to sleep and shower and that’s what I got. I’d go back!
Top ,.. top top … post! Keep the good work on !
