All About the Park

Where to start! The state park is the oldest and largest state park in Oklahoma. The park encompasses the entire lake which was built in the 1930s. I’ll start where I stayed at Martin’s Landing Campground.

Martin’s Landing is right on the water. I stayed in spot 18 which was located here. This spot was excellent and was nice being a pull-in spot. It also was only about 20 feet from the lakeshore. This spot especially wasn’t suited for tent campers unless you’re ready to set up on the concrete, which I did see at a few places. Martin’s Landing did have a good bathhouse right in the center of the campground. It was clean and seemed maintained. It also had free showers. They also had just finished a brand new shower building. There is also a shelter and swim area on the west side of the campground.

The campgrounds all around the park have similar amenities to Martin’s Landing campground. There are also several boat ramps so you don’t always have to go to the marina to gain water access.

Things to Do Around Lake Murray State Park

The rest of Lake Murray State Park has many amenities. There is a golf course on the west side of the lake. A lodge and convention center are also on the west side of the lake. There are also mini-cabins by the lodging and golfing area. There is also a splash pad, mini-golf, and swim adventure park all by the lodge. Finally, don’t forget about boat marina located on the southwest side of the lake for all your summertime fun!

There are also swimming areas throughout the lake property. There is a small nature center too. Tucker Tower is also a wonderful spot to visit due to its unique look and the ability to go to the top and have a wonderful view! There are also several hiking trails around the nature center and tucker tower. A museum and history exposé are located in Tucker Tower. Lake Murray State Park has every lake option you can dream up.

Around the Area

Ardmore Oklahoma is the nearest large city to Lake Murray. It is a moderate-sized city but has plenty of stores and groceries in order to get your food and supplies for a lake weekend. There is also a convention center in Ardmore that hosts all kinds of activities. There is also a casino located in Thackerville and you can see music concerts or try your luck at gambling.

Area Hospitals

Mercy Hospital Ardmore is located in Ardmore about 10 miles to the north of the lake. There is a 24-hour emergency room at this location.

Area Veterinarians

Ardmore Animal Hospital is one option for vet services and has some after-hour services in case of emergency.

Lake Murray State Park Ratings

Bathroom

The bathrooms at Martin’s Landing were well kept and maintained. There were no coin-operated showers and everything worked. They also had just finished building the new bathhouse near the entrance. This was an above-average experience!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Camp Sites

There were several RV sites located right on the water! This was a wonderful perk and with the nice lake breeze it really was a perfect afternoon sitting around enjoying nature. All the other spots had good views and were only a short distance from the water. There wasn’t any damaged equipment or trash about. The campground looked well maintained.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Activities

The activities in the state park are top notch. A lodge, rental place, marina, nature center, hiking, museum, golfing, swimming, camping, and any other thing you can think of is available for your summer plans!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Location

The state park is very large but there is a moderately sized city near in case you do need to run into town for something. There is even some possibility to go see a few things like Chickasaw National Recreation Area or Lake Texoma, all within an hour. It’s even within a few-hour drive from Oklahoma City or Dallas.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Visible Cell Service

I got 25 Mbps download and 6 Mbps upload from my Iphone 8 in Martin’s Landing Campground.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Conclusion

Lake Murray was really wonderful! I honestly wasn’t expecting much and was skeptical about what I’d find at such a large park and wide-open lake. I really was impressed once I arrived and got to drive around and see how much is there. Several campgrounds are available and many renovations are underway to keep the park updated. I didn’t partake in any rentals that day due to having my dog with me but there were several options ranging from SUPs to boats. I really can’t wait to return later in the summer!

How much does it cost to camp at Lake Murray State Park?

My RV spot cost $30 per night and included a water spigot and electric hook-up.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is only 1 hour north of Lake Murray State Park.
