Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park Oklahoma Review

A hidden gem located just one hour from Oklahoma City is Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park in Hinton Oklahoma! I camped just one night but it was idyllic and beautiful in April 2022! The red sandstone cliffs are beautiful and there are several fun activities in the park, including rappelling!

Pros

  • Gorgeous red rock cliffs
  • Close to OKC
  • A unique spot in Oklahoma

Cons

  • Expensive campsites

Camping at Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park

I stayed at the Canyon Campground which is a tent-only area and all sites include a cement picnic table and fire ring. The coin-operated shower and the bathrooms are also located in Canyon Campground. I stayed in spot 4 and it was at the very tip of the canyon and very beautiful.

I was able to get a hammock up and enjoyed the views of the cliffs all around. The cement picnic table did have some damage but was clean and looks like some repairs have been made in the past. The fire ring was average and I didn’t have any issues. It didn’t have a cooking grate attached so I used my own.

Trekking at Red Rock Canyon

There is one main long loop around the top of the cliffs and it is accessible from several spots around the park. The Red Rock Canyon Rim Trail is the main one in the park and a really cool hike and lots of lookout spots!

There are several shorter trails located throughout the park and all are great spots to visit. There is even a dedicated nature trail and lots of fun for the family on all those trails. Be careful around the edges of cliffs because there are no safety rails or bars stopping anyone from falling.

The Area

Hinton Oklahoma is a small town located right off of I-40. The park is located 5 miles to the south of the interstate. It is in western Oklahoma and has lots of rolling hills all around the park and prairie grass. It’s also very windy so be ready for winds at almost any time of the year.

There isn’t much public land or any other big park areas near Hinton, OK. You will have to drive a few hours to find any kind of public land like the Wichita Mountains Refuge. You may be a bit isolated out there so be ready.

Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park Ratings

Bathrooms

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The bathrooms were obviously several years old but they looked taken care of. Everything was stocked and cleaned up. Above average for sure!

Campsites

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The campsites were nice and looked picked up and maintained even if they were a little older. The sites in the Canyon Campground were all without electricity, a little old but maintained.

Activities

Rating: 4 out of 5.

There’s a lot to do around the park. You can swim at the pool, relax at the shop, rappel down the cliffs, and the park has several day-use group areas.

Location

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

The park is a bit isolated and located near a very small town. It’s only 50 miles from Oklahoma City so it’s close but once you’re at the park there’s not much else than a gas station.

AT&T Cell Service

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I didn’t get a record but I was able to stream videos and music with no issues so I’d imagine it’s more than 5Mbps up and down.

Conclusion

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park is worthy of any camping or trekking list a person may have! It’s been a top park I like to visit on quiet weekends. It isn’t a state park anymore but the city has kept up with that standard and continues to add and change things. You’re in for a nice treat whether you’re from OKC, driving through, or vanlifing.
