Spavinaw Area is an Oklahoma state park located near the town of Spaivnaw. It is well known for being on a creek that is a wonderful summer destination! Northeastern Oklahoma is called “Green Country” and it is well deserved. This is a great place to sit and enjoy the cool water and have a BBQ for a fun weekend of family fun! Here’s some good info to help get you started from my trip there.

Things to Do at Spavinaw Area at Grand Lake State Park
Spavinaw Area at Grand Lake is not actually on Grand Lake but it in the Grand Lake area. The state administers the park. The city of Tulsa controls the lake and spillway so any fishing on the lake requires a Tulsa fishing license. It’s an interesting divide. Keep that in mind when you’re buying fishing licenses and know which body of water you’re in and which license you’ll need, state and/or city license.
Spavinaw’s main attraction is the creek which lots of people enjoy for summer swimming. It’s pretty nice and lots of people stop by and swim or fish all throughout the day. The spillway is also a very big attraction to the state park. The shallow water and the spillway make for a fun swimming experience and while the water was rushing when I was there, in the summer people climb on the spillway and enjoy the water.
The park has lots of creekside RV spots and there are also tent spots a bit farther away from the creek. You can make reservations on the state park website. The one bathroom building has a male and female room which contains a toilet, sink, and shower. There were also 2 portable toilets in the park. That’s it. According to the camp host, the original bathroom building disappeared after severe flooding a few years back.
Around the Area
The area is covered with water and lakes all within an hour’s drive from the state park. Lake Hudson, Grand Lake, Spavinaw Lake and several others are all so close for fishing or recreation. There is also the opportunity for hunting at Spavinaw Hills State Game Refuge.
Area Hospital
Always do your own research for your own needs but the nearest 24/7 emergency room seems to be in Pryor Oklahoma here. The website showing their services is here.
Area Veterinarians
The nearest vet office appears to be located here. Their website is here.
Spavinaw Area at Grand Lake State Park Rankings
Bathrooms
This is the only building in the park. The bathrooms are newer but since there are only two and got packed in the evening it’s rated at only an average rating. More buildings are needed.
Campsites
The campsites at the park are adequate and there are several close to the creek for easy access. There’s ample space for both tent and RV. The one main thing I didn’t enjoy was how bright the park lights are at night. Be ready for high lights and several light poles all around the park. Bring some shades for the windows.
Activities
There isn’t much at the park besides swimming and fishing. I know some people enjoy that but I’d like a little more.
Location
The Green Country of Oklahoma is a great part of the nation. This park could be a great springboard for all the other parks and lakes in the area.
Visible Cell Service
I did have full service in the park and got full download speeds.
Conclusion
This park is really wonderful and worth a trip if you’re ever in the area! Unfortunately for me, I enjoy more hiking opportunities while this park is for fishing and swimming. This place is a great family weekend spot where you can set up your RV or tent and stay in one place. If you’re looking for a fun weekend adventure with the family this is your spot!
Yes, and there are several areas in the state park which you can get into the creek to swim.
