You can experience a wonderful forest adventure only 20 minutes from Kaiserslautern Germany with this awesome abandoned train track, bridge, and tunnel. This is the Dreibrunnertal Bridge and Stempelkopf tunnel trek. Learn how to get there and back and see all that it has to offer!
Getting to the Area
The parking and hiking area is located in a small forest area about 10 miles/16 km to the northeast of Kaiserslautern Germany. It’s on the northern edge of the Palatinate Forest which is a specially protected national forest in Germany. There is a dirt parking area for cars and a bus stop. There was a wooden outhouse but it was locked every time we checked.
Be ready for a busy parking lot during peak hiking times. It was almost full by noon on Sunday in January 2023.
The Trek
The trek starts across the street from the parking lot and goes under the first bridge called the Eistalviadukt. There are some fences for that bridge but several parts of it are damaged so be careful near this bridge. You can then follow the tracks to the west. There are trees and several impediments to walking so be careful as you walk along the track.
There is a road about halfway along the way that parallels the tracks for about 400 meters. This is a less difficult option and a welcome break after dodging rails and fallen trees. Right before the bridge, you can leave the road and then walk over the bridge. You continue for about 5 more minutes of walking and you’ll be at the entrance of the Stempelkopf Tunnel.
The Dreibrunnertal Bridge and Eiswoog Lake Area
There is a restaurant and hotel right next to Eiswoog Lake which is near the parking area. You can get a quick coffee or a meal if you need to. There are also other hiking trails that start from this lake area. You can also start a hike that goes under the Dreibrunnertal Bridge. You could really make an entire day all from this lake area. Happy trekking!
The trail is about 1.1 miles one way.
It is free to park your car at the trailhead parking lot.
